Dwts season 14 week 7 performance

Katherine. Very odd choice of song for a rumba. She didn't have much hip movement and she never settled into her hips. There was only a little side to side. Lots of turns and poses. I would have expected more from her. I'll agree with the scores, but maybe a little high for lack of hips.

Melissa. Another strange piece of music. It made it a bit hard to get into the dance. Judges were pretty hard on them. I saw a few blips and at times she did look like she was concentrating rather than acting the dance. I have a feeling this will be the lowest score of the night.

William. At least this song was a Viennese waltz. He looked a little hunched over. Probably could have stood up a little straighter. His feet looked off as well. Not smooth, jerky. Scored much too high.

Roshon. Bad romance? Seriously? I still have trouble seeing him as something other than a boy. Trying seemed off about the flicks. I preferred this over William but I'll agree with the scores.

Donald. Much better than William. Much smoother. Fleckerals looked odd though. There were a few other places that looked odd. I'll agree with the scores.

Maria. I like her dress without the collar. I really need a red lace dress. Not much attack with the foot work and she spent a little too long sitting on the floor doing nothing. I don't think it should have gotten 30.

Jaleel. Not bad, but Viennese waltz doesn't have as much rise and fall as he was showing. He looked hoppy. Kym's dress is pretty. I'll agree with the scores but it was better then William's.

Can I even call what Karina is wearing a dress?

Team tango. Interesting choreography. Jaleel's footwork looked a bit off in his solo. hard to critique in these dances due to length and amount of people on the floor at the same time. Not fond of the costumes. I'll hold off on the critique of scores until after team paso.

Team paso. Donald was the strongest while unfortunately Melissa had to be compared to two pros. I liked the costumes, or lack there of, better. I don't know if this was deserving of a lower score them the tango.

I think the judges are truly being too hard on Melissa given how much they over score practically everyone else left in the competition. Agree, disagree? Remember to follow me on twitter @khascat.

End of april

It is almost the end of April which means this month's 'blue' theme is almost over. The next chosen color is purple. I'm probably going to keep working on Dew Drop Fairy as there is purple in this and I'm not quite tired of the design yet. I did finish the first two pages of the design, the third page is skinnier than the first two so it shouldn't take as long

The sewing pattern I ordered was still on backorder and would possibly take up to three weeks to come. My performance is in three weeks. I called the local fabric store and thankfully they had it in stock. So I have my pattern, I cut it out and made the modifications for my length and have everything downstairs to cut the fabric tomorrow. I may make a modification to the sleeve pattern to make it more suitable for lifting my arms.

We finished the choreography for the showcase today. It ended up being a combination of waltz, cha cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive. It's not easy and I was tired by the end of the lesson.  Tomorrow I'm going to head to NYC to get a new pair of shoes. I need black and unfortunately the style that I wear in my normal heels comes with a silver heel that "Mr. Picky" doesn't' like for me.

In addition, all those lovely HEAD patterns arrived today along with the new fabric for 'insanity'. I'll use the old fabric for the new HEAD's. Whichever ones I end up working on first. I need to finish up a few other WIPS before I start something else though.

I also ordered some stretch fabrics from a vendor that's decided to get out of the dress making business and focus on other things. She's selling them really cheap. Most end up being $2-3/yd on fabrics that retail at $13+. Good deal. I've gotten some nude fabrics. Here are a few of the more interesting ones.
These are on auction, let's hope I get them.

Dwts season 14 week 6 performance

I know a lot of you visiting tonight are following a re-tweet from either @dwtsgossip or @dwtsmaksimfans. I thank them for doing that. Please follow me on twitter @khascat to know when I update my blog.

Gladys. No hip action, her feet were flicking up off the floor when they don't be. Footwork looked odd and her ones were bent too much. She looked like her arms were a bit lost at times. She enjoyed it but she isn't the best dancer. I liked her dress. Way over scored.

Maria. Not fond of the hopping in the choreography. Foxtrot is usually smooth. still too straight in hold. I had trouble seeing her feet long enough to tell if she was doing the heel leads. I don't know if I would have given them 9's.

Roshon. He had hip action, at least the figure eights, and Chelsea didn't dance around him while he took two steps. Kudos for him. It was however not smooth enough for a rumba. More movement through his body would fill up the time more. He also needed to settle in his hips. I liked her dress, but not fond of the color. I'll agree with the scores.

Katherine. Song isn't really a samba. Her voltes need a little work. She has the bounce, although it's supposed to be absorbed through the stomach so your head stays at the same level. I didn't particularly like the 'funk' but understand why they added it especially with that song. I like the dress. Maybe a little high but she's still one of the best of the bunch.

Donald. It seemed a tiny bit hoppy but it was decent. I enjoyed watching it. I like her dress. Can I have it? One of my favorite colors. I agree with the scores.

Melissa. Probably her best dance. Very basic, elegant Viennese waltz. Could've worked on keeping the motion going in her arms rather than stopping for a beat. I like her dress. Underscored.

Jaleel. He was picking his feet up off the floor too much with the lock steps and new yorkers. lock steps looked a little awkward. Not much cha cha content actually. Over scored.

William. What's with putting them in brown? And Cheryl danced around him. He barely moved and the bit he did was not that good. They played on the sex appeal. Scored way too high.

Dance marathon. The format makes it hard to give comments on everyone, but I think they got the order fairly correct.

It's Gladys' time to go home this week. She's clearly the weakest left.

She has a face

I've added more to 'dew drop fairy'. Her upper body and hair are done. I may move on to adding the metallics on the page I'm working on next week. You can sort of see the ones I've already added sparking on the wings on the left.

In terms of my dancing, rumba and paso sections are mostly choreographed for the showcase. Also, my pattern hasn't shipped yet though I ordered it a week and a half ago and the company said they usually ship next business day. It hasn't been charged to my credit card though. I find it a bit odd.

Dwts season 14 week 5 performance

I love Santana. That reminds me I need to put some more of his music back on my phone... Just a note, like the quickstep, I've never danced argentine tango, but I know what it's supposed to look like.

Jaleel. Little hoppy with his voltes but he had more hip action then I usually see fun a make celebrity. Kym's outfit is interesting. I'll agree with the scores so far.

Melissa. Her arms looked a little dead and like she was slipping on the floor a bit. She was trying, she didn't mess up the steps but it looked a little off. The dress is interesting, but I've prefer to wear Kym's. I'll agree with the scores.

Maria. Why is she dressed like brazilian samba but dancing salsa. Her laugh is still annoying. Salsa is not hard and she was doing basic steps with tricks. She could've used more hip movement, no rounding as she changed direction, just to the side if that. Hard to tell from my angle. It just looked odd to me. Scored too high.

Katherine. Clean, interesting, but she looked like she was concentrating on the steps rather than the passion in places. Arm when not in hold looked a bit lost. I'll agree with the scores.

Gavin. Should I even try and list all the things wrong with that dance? Let's just say it was bad and move on. I would've given even lower scores.

William. This song is not a tango. Most of it was Cheryl dancing around him. I'll give him the acting but he better be good at that. Katherine's was better. Scored high.

Gladys. Too tentative. Too straight while doing the rolls. I couldn't even tell she was supposed to be doing batucatas. No bounce, feet never went anywhere. Not her best dance. Way over scored.

Roshon. He had hips, and everything else. Best salsa of the night. Little bit of chelsea dancing around him at one point. Maybe a little low considering how others were scored.

Donald. Can I have her dress? Good routine. I liked it better then William's. Should have been at least equal or above William.

Another change and lots of pictures

I'm giving up on insanity until I get a new piece of fabric. Luckily I found a piece of 18 ct large enough to fit it without having to splice two pieces.

Since I have to get the fabric, I figured I'd look at the charts and kits on the site and I found this.

It goes on my list of, I'm definitely buying this list along with the other there John Clayton dancer series I have yet to get. Cheaper to buy it directly from England myself. I'll probably buy these within the next month or so. Ordered the fabric today along with the following HEAD charts that were on clearance.

This is the piece I'm working on now, 'Dew Drop Fairy'. It also fits with the blue theme. On the top is where I was when I picked it back up, bottom is where I am now.

Mainly worked on the leaves above her head. I was going to work on TW's Romeo and Juliet, but the working copy of the page I was on was not with the rest of the kit. I have an inkling of where it is, but I didn't feel like rummaging for it.

On my own dancing front, my teacher wants to do a showcase in May with a matrix theme. I picked up stretch faux leather over the summer and ordered the pattern I'd need the other day. So my next sewing project is a leather catsuit. Maybe after that I'll get around to one of the other two latin dresses I have the fabric for.

I got the CD I ordered from the photographer at the competition Monday. I'm including my favorites below.

Dwts season 14 week 4 performance

Rock week. Prepare sure lots of leather, chains, eyeliner, tango and paso doble. I know some Viennese waltzes that would fit but I'd be surprised if we see one. And if they use a song by Adam Lambert I well cringe. The singers botched the last one horribly.

Sherri. She looked tentative with her steps. Maybe it was the boots. I have a similar pair, but higher heel, but can't dance comfortably due to lack of flexibility in the ankle. Seemed like they walked through it, not much was sharp. Most emotion seemed to be in the table. Val looked good. Sherri's top kept her contained. I agree with scores.

Katherine. I like how they did her make up. Not bad but a little too much time with the 'skirt'. The shoes may have been a factor like Sherri. Can I have the outfit? I'll agree with the scores.

Jaleel. He had the heel leads and his frame seemed to stay put, but his butt looked like it was sticking out a not. Better tango than Sherri. I agree with lack of aggression, but that song didn't lends itself to that. Liked hey dress, but the leopard ruffle is a little too big for my taste. I'll agree with the scores.

Melissa. Good choreography, he always does goods paso's. She kept up with Maks. One criticism, she hit a pose and stayed there. She needed to fill up the space with aggression. Maybe a little low with the scores.

Donald. He had the posturing and presentation correct. Could have done without the crazy facial expression. I'll agree with the scores.

Gladys. No heel leads. either flat foot or toes. Not the best song to use for a tango. She looked like she was being pulled by Tristan. I'll agree with the scores but that war not a good performance.

William. Kicks weren't bad, but he looked lost at the end, trick was botched. Didn't look much like a jive. Very little he looked comfortable with. Chasses were too hoppy. Scores were too high. Not fond of her dress.

Roshon. I like this song. Not as smooth as it should be. He has a jerky up and down. He pulled it off but could have been better. I like get dress, I probably wouldn't wear it though. I think the scores were a tad high. I would have given all 8's.

Maria. Interesting way to get rid of the outer costume. Props to the choreography. I wouldn't rave on it like the judges. Scores too high.

Gavin. I do not like Karina's dress. I think that may have been the best he's done so far. He's shoulders were high and some parts were a little funky with his feet. I liked the tricks. I think the scores may have been a tad high.

Overall lower scores from the previous weeks but they still over score some people. I enjoyed it but as you can see I'm picky, but I can pick out things I need to improve myself by watching the videos of my own performances.

some updates

I know I usually do my updates Sunday but I wanted a little spacing between these types of updates and my weekly posting of DWTS opinions.

Well, I managed to only get 3 rows done on 'insanity' this week. I wasn't expecting much and it's not enough to take a picture of. It took me almost two hours to do the first row, granted I was distracted slightly by TV. Upon nearly completing the next row, I realized I had gone down several stitches as 2x1 and had to redo them. Not easy with the stitch size and amount of thread already on the back. I had time during the week to work on it more given I was home sick from work, but I wasn't able to give it the amount of concentration it would need. I tried to but managed to only find I had messed up on the last stitch, another 2x1 but the other way then some conflict with the blends that I didn't want to deal with. Oh well. This piece is going to take me a long time even if I didn't screw up. I'm very tempted to scrap what I've done so far and either do half cross-stitch or find a fabric with larger holes. The reason for this particular set up was I don't know where or how to find a piece big enough to accomodate it unless I ended up stitching several together after I had finished. 18ct would cause it to be approximately 44"x32". At least i think it would be stitched quicker. Thoughts or ideas?

I did however manage to rip and post my videos from the showcase in September (yes I know, long time ago but I did only get the DVD in march) and my last competition. I should have the pictures from the photographer mid week.

My September showcase

Open bronze latin

Closed gold latin

Open latin 3 dance

Open smooth

Enjoy.

Dwts season 14 week 3 performance

Jack. Samba, oh boy. One of the hardest dances to get right technically. What's with the odd color choices for this couple? He had a little bounce on a very sort section. No hip action (what were you looking at Len?), hunched over, looked strange overall. I predict over inflated scores. And I was right.

Maria. It wasn't too bad technically but the steps she took looked flat. She didn't have much time to use her arms as Derek had her in hold almost the entire time. It was more steps then I'm used to seeing in a rumba on the show by a female celeb. Too high of scores once again.

Gladys. Song is more an American rumba than a foxtrot but they only follow international Latin on the show. I'm not seeing heal leads. It was smooth like the foxtrot should be but a bit underwhelming. I like the dress, reminds me a bit of my dress. I think they were judging on something other than her dance.

Roshon. Not bad but I could pick on improper technique with this dance all day. Song was not traditional by any means. You would not hear this used for competition. He's really skinny and detracts any masculine aura those moves would normally have. Scored a bit high but I may give it to him.

Gavin. Well the hat disappears for part of rehearsal... I give him credit for moving his hips in the cucarachas and opening out but it was a lot of Karina dancing around him and poses. His face was kind of blank the entire dance. Pivots were heavy and a bit awkward. Karina'a dress was, interesting? bit high for lack of footwork but I'll give it to him for hip action.

Katherine. Pretty song, pretty dress. Not much to criticize except not far enough into proper position. Head better then most but still straight in the upper body. That and the foot lift off the floor. Feet always skim the floor unless lifting into a develope or in a held spinning position. I'll give them the scores.

Sherri. She played the emotion rather than anything else. She didn't settle, no hip action, and her footwork looked sloppy. She stayed balanced during the turns. Knees were a little too bent. Scores too high for technical but like last week was based on performance. Didn't care for the dress.

Melissa. Clean but could pick up her knees more. Looked like she was walking through part of it. Liked the slow parts. Rumba should be a good dance from her. They may get good scores tonight? Yay for 8's. But still low for the night.

Jaleel. Smooth, but didn't really look rumba. Odd song. Is it really that empirical to revisit stephen? I would've given slightly lower.

William. Traditional song. You do not need to pick your feet up that much for the salsa basic. makes it look heavy. He had hip action, but I think it was more if the gyrating kind then out of any from salsa technique. Scored way too high.

Donald. The smoke hid most of his footwork. I saw pigeon toes and probably heel leads. Peta's dress is different. I like it. Scored on emotional content.

Five way tie for the bottom. Sheesh.

A change of projects

First off, I reached 1000 views on my big. Not bad for just three months. Now when I was stitching on 'cats...' on Thursday, it wasn't really holding my interest. I figured it would happen eventually, the style doesn't fit with most of my projects. So up comes 'stitchers hangout' monthly theme SAL of 'blue.' First thing that came to mind was GK's 'mountain landscape with a castle'. The first route of pages are mainly blue sky. I took this picture before I started working on it again.

This is 17 rows of 52 stitches on the first page. Below, is a picture of the fabric I'm stitching on.

You can barely see the section I've done. I estimate the back is 1/8" thick with thread. I have to use size 5 embroidery needles and an adhesive leather thimble pad to push it through. I estimated a while ago that at the rate I can stitch on this piece even if I work on it 24/7 it will still take me over a year. I have a feeling it's closer to two years. I've nicknamed this my 'insanity' piece because I was insane to take it on. 794x572 = 454,168 stitches. It's a 158 page chart if I remember correctly, and I'm doing it 2 over 1 on 28 ct fabric if I recall correctly.

This is a picture my teacher took of us after we had finished dancing for the day.  For those interested in seeing the professional photographers shots of the day (I weeded myself out) http://ryankennerphotography.zenfolio.com/nQFeaEwIA58A2so-h.fav  I do have the video and will eventually put these up on youtube but first I have to find which external hard drive my ripping software is on.
